Business Goals

Finding Inspiration

Educate parents and children about healthy life choices

Finding more effective ways to support people in understanding nutrition to lead to healthier lifestyles

  • Expand the reach of "Live Life Well @School" beyond schools and engage with the broader community.

  • Increase the level of parental involvement in educating their children about healthy eating and nutrition.

  • Make educational materials and resources for parents easily available to help them support nutrition habits.

  • Encourage parents to be more active by making simple daily choices that can be added to their family's routine.

Main goal: Contribute to improving the long-term health outcomes of students and their families.

  • Educate parents and children about healthy life choices.

  • Finding more effective ways to support people in understanding nutrition to lead to healthier lifestyles.

Whole school approach

“A whole-school approach extends the learning environment from what is taught inside the classroom to how students’ well-being is supported outside the classroom. This type of approach is commonly recognised as characterising a health-promoting school.”

A ‘health promoting school’ addresses three areas

  • involvement of parents and community

  • formal curriculum

  • school ethos

Surveys & Interviews

Source: NSW Health (https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/heal/schools/Documents/research/Awholeschoolapproach.pdf)

Our research focused on understanding the challenges that parents, teachers, and the community face in being healthy and active. We also wanted to determine if they were familiar with the 'Live Life Well' program. Through their responses, we could address them and come up with possible solutions.

We conducted:

  • 5 interviews

  • 29 surveys

Our preliminary findings indicate that the Live Life Well @ School program is not effectively reaching its intended audience. (92.6%)

Happy Path prototypes

From our perspective:

  • Get more user feedback on design;

  • Further design iterations;

  • Make the website responsive for desktop;

  • Could make the program viable on social media;

  • Must work on the teachers and students perspective

"Eating healthy, exercising, and taking care of many things is a lot to do in a short amount of time. Most of the time, I go for what is convenient, like preparing a dinner in less time and not as healthy as it could be," - the survey respondent.

We started doing the affinity map after collecting the raw data from the interviews and surveys. Synthesise into groups was the next step. Than define subgroups, insights, “how might we" and possible solutions.

The main challenges we identified were relating to:

RoleModels

  • Arranging Meetups or Communitiy events

  • Regular Family Visits

  • Getting Involved in regular routine

  • Promoting Activities with the whole family

  • Building good routines for parents to follow

  • Provide resources that are easy to follow and implement.

We crafted an archetype by utilizing techniques like empathy mapping and affinity diagramming. These methods helped us understand our users' perspectives and identify key patterns in their behaviors and needs. The archetype we created is a reflection of these insights, capturing the essential characteristics and features that emerged from our empathy and affinity analyses.

Problem Statement

Multitasking Parents want to develop a healthy lifestyle and be role models for their children, but they have very little time and can’t find information in a convenient way, which means they currently feel guilty that they might be letting down their family.

Journey Mapping

  • Poor Examples of parenting

  • Busy schedules

  • Financial constraints

  • Overuse of devices

  • Motivation/Fatigue

Hypothesis

We believe it will be easier for parents to develop a healthy lifestyle and become role models by providing a new responsive site with an intuitive user interface, easily accessible resources, and opportunities for ongoing family and school collaboration via a school profile page and rewards program.

Here we display the journey the user currently has to go through to access resources relevant to them.

Information Architecture

To access the Live Life Well @ School from NSW Health website it is necessary to traverse numerous pages and it could easily be lost in the process.

Information Architecture

- current site map

Issues:

  • Features relevant to parents (highlighted in red) are not easily accessible.

  • Parent resources are currently located on the ‘Resources for Teachers’ page and as a recipe collection on a separate website.

How could we work on the pain points to provide the archetype with a happy path?

  • Make clear to the user where he is on the website by making content easy to find and not leading to confusion or frustration (visibility of system status; recognition rather than recall);

  • Provide users with options to customize their experience. With the ability to save preferences when they register on the website (flexibility and efficiency of use).

  • Ensure the website is responsive, adapting seamlessly to various devices and screen sizes. (flexibility and efficiency of use)

  • Prioritize the most important content on the homepage and use clear headings and subheadings to guide users through the page. (aesthetic and minimalist design)

Incorporating features like forums and the reward program can offer users more value and make the app more engaging and user-friendly.

Next Steps

From your perspective:

  • Give feedback on what we are proposing.

  • Understand which user type should be prioritising next: teachers or Students

  • Consolidate some or all of the programs into a single, user-friendly page. Could we relate them?

Consolidation

  • There are numerous initiatives and services promoting health offered by the NSW government.

  • However, the programs do not have any hierarchy, are confusingly intertwined, and, in some instances, offer the same content or service and overlap.

  • In the future, NSW Health may need to consider consolidating some or all of these initiatives to make something more streamlined.

Journey of NSW Health Live life well

In this project, we thoroughly grasped the concerns of both parents and teachers about keeping kids active and healthy. This understanding led us to revamp the NSW website for greater ease of use. We added motivating features like reward programs and forums to engage kids more actively throughout their health journey. Our new features are not only user-friendly but also time-efficient, enhancing interactivity. Moreover, this redesign aids in connecting with local communities, offering users effortless access to nutritious recipes and exercise charts right at their fingertips.
